EPA to regulate perchlorate

In a reversal, the Obama EPA is set to develop drinking water standards for the chemical perchlorate, which can cause thyroid and other problems. It is widely found in rocket fuel, and regulations were originally proposed in 2002. A draft assessment, suggested setting the limit at 1 ppb (part per billion). But those regulations were never enacted, and a controversy ensued after suspected top-down edits of a report 6 years later by the Bush White House. Unfortunately, the EPA suggests that it will take another 2 years to finalize the standard.
