SUMMARY:2024 Allegheny River of the Year Event: 20th Annual Allegheny Reservoir Clean-up with Three Rivers Waterkeeper
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 (20th Annual) Allegheny Reservoir Clean-up will take place on Saturday\, May 11\, 2024. \nDeadline to register is Thursday\, May 2nd. \nWe’ll meet at the Highbanks Campground (same as last year) at 8 a.m. where everyone will sign-in and be given supplies (trash bags and gloves) prior to being taken to a designated spot.\nIf you’re interested in participating in one of the premier community conservation events in the area\, first visit the FAQ page\, and then head over to the Volunteer page to sign up!\n(Note that some of the info on the FAQ page is intended for the autumn river cleanups so\, keep that in mind as you read it.) \nVolunteers should bring:\nRain Gear-the cleanup will be completed rain or shine.\nLayered Clothing-Individuals come prepared for a range of weather conditions\, which can change rapidly in mid-May in northwestern Pennsylvania.\nFood & Water-Individuals are responsible for bringing their own lunch and snacks. We will provide hot dogs\, chips and beverages at the end of the day! \nWe look forward to another great time this year!

DESCRIPTION:BIPOC PADDLE \nDo you identify as BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous\, Person of Color)? Are you interested in beginner-friendly guided kayak trips and spending time in nature? Join other BIPOC individuals on one or all of the paddles in this series. We hope you’ll experience a sense of connection with nature among fellow BIPOC outdoor enthusiasts as we kayak along the beautiful Allegheny River. \nMeet at Kayak Pittsburgh Sharpsburg\, where we’ll introduce ourselves and cover the basics of kayaking. Once everyone is equipped with a boat\, paddle\, and life jacket\, we’ll paddle out to explore the Allegheny River together at a relaxed pace. Food and alcoholic beverages for purchase will be available on-site with Farmer X Baker\, Trace Brewing\, and Kona Ice. A portion of the proceeds from Trace Brewing and Kona Ice purchases will be donated to Three Rivers Waterkeeper! \nBring your lawn chairs\, yard games\, family and friends\, and join us for a fun time and celebrate Pennsylvania’s River of the Year\, the Allegheny River (Ohi:yo’\, The Good River). \nRegistering for the free tickets allows us to prepare for the crowd! Get your tickets now! \nThe Allegheny River | The Ohi:yo’\nThe historic Allegheny River starts as a stream in Potter County\, meandering through a field of wildflowers before crossing briefly through New York and then through six counties in Western Pennsylvania. The 325-mile river ends in Pittsburgh where it meets the Monongahela River and flows into the Ohio River\, providing drinking water to more than one million people and acting as an ecologically and economically precious water trail. \nThe fertile valleys and abundant biodiversity have led many communities to call this place home\, including the O-non-dowa-gah (Seneca Nation) who call the Allegheny Ohi:yo’ (beautiful river\, the good river)\, the Lenni Lenape (Delaware Nation) who named it welhik-heny (most beautiful stream)\, and French settlers who referred to it as La Belle Riviere. \nA series of locks and dams were constructed in the early 20th century to make the Allegheny River navigable for barges to transport goods\, and now swimming\, boating\, and fishing are profoundly enjoyed by residents and visitors. The river includes the Allegheny Islands Wilderness\, a seven-island\, 372 acre preserve that boasts old-growth hardwoods and prolific bird populations. The US Forest Service has documented over 50 mammals\, 200 birds\, 25 amphibians\, 20 reptiles\, 80 fishes\, and 25 freshwater mussels in and around the Allegheny\, including the threatened Salamander Mussel (Simpsonaias ambigua)\, who help improve our water quality by filtering out sediment and pollutants. \nWhether you are bird watching\, island camping\, or traveling through the locks\, you are sure to find that the Allegheny River is rich with life\, history\, and beauty.

Venture Outdoors welcomes active folks in larger bodies to get outside this year through its series of size-friendly outings\, at a pace that is safe and comfortable for each person. Each trip listing will give you the information you need to decide if the outing is right for you: active time and pace\, general route and terrain\, and if any experience is needed. You can look forward to a variety of monthly activities throughout the year\, all in a positive and welcoming atmosphere in which we will celebrate all shapes and sizes. Join us for one outing\, join us for all. This is where you belong. \nSharpsburg River Paddle\nLaunching from Kayak Pittsburgh Sharpsburg\, we’ll take in the sights and sounds of the Allegheny as we head down the river and back. We’ll cover the basics of kayaking while also explaining how to safely navigate rivers while in a kayak. \nEfficient paddling focuses on upper-body and core strength\, which is needed to propel you through the water. The pace will be leisurely but paddling through river currents will test your strength and stamina! You will get wet from the paddle moving across the deck. \nSolo kayaks are best for participants 325-pounds or under\, while those 350-plus would be better served in a tandem kayak. SUMMARY:2024 Allegheny River of the Year Event - 4th of July Fireworks Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Fourth Of July Fireworks Paddle \nJoin us for a cool night paddle under the city lights on the Allegheny River as we watch Pittsburgh’s Fourth of July fireworks show light up the skyline! Previous kayak experience is required. Please arrive early to allow time to find parking.  \nThe start of the fireworks is scheduled for 9:35. We plan to be on the water and in a position to watch the fireworks by then. If time allows after\, and participants are interested\, we can continue kayaking on the water until the scheduled end of the program.      \nTrip Leader: Our trained Excursionists and Volunteer Trip Leaders all have night paddling experience. They will guide the group along the river before the show. Once a good spot is found\, the group will remain there to take in the fireworks! \nActivity level: Intermediate – We recommend participants have some paddling experience in the past. This does not need to be extensive\, not does it need to have occurred during the nighttime. However\, nighttime paddling has more variables so the previous experience will come in handy! \nWhat to Bring: While kayaking is not necessarily a “get wet” sport\, you might get dripped on or splashed occasionally. It is best to wear clothes that dry quickly. Wear comfortable shoes that could potentially get wet. Additionally\, since we will be paddling at night\, a light jacket might come in handy. Venture Outdoors will provide all the necessary kayak lights for nighttime operations. Participants can also bring a headlamp if they would like \nDistance: Participants should not expect to cover a long distance for this trip – likely between 0.5 and 1.0 miles overall. We will depart from the launch\, do some light paddling around the Point area (unable to cross the river to the Point due to the fireworks safety zone)\, and then remain on the water for the show.  \nStarting Location: The trip will depart from our launch at Heinz Quay on the riverwalk directly below Acrisure Stadium. This program will depart from our Downtown pop-up and paddle around the Allegheny River while our trip leaders cover interesting facts and stories about Pittsburgh’s land and waterways. \nTrip Leader: Our trained Excursionists and Volunteer Trip Leaders all have extensive paddling experience. They will provide an instructional/safety talk before getting on the water and then guide the group along the river. \nActivity level: Beginner – this event is a designed to be a calm paddle along the river. The Allegheny River is generally smooth flowing\, but it does have motorized traffic on it as well. Venture Outdoors welcomes active folks in larger bodies to get outside this year through its series of size-friendly outings\, at a pace that is safe and comfortable for each person. Each trip listing will give you the information you need to decide if the outing is right for you: active time and pace\, general route and terrain\, and if any experience is needed. You can look forward to a variety of monthly activities throughout the year\, all in a positive and welcoming atmosphere in which we will celebrate all shapes and sizes. Join us for one outing\, join us for all. This is where you belong. \nAllegheny River Sunset Paddle\nNew to kayaking? This is the place to start. Our kayak instructors can train you to paddle with efficiency\, grace\, and direction. Learn about your boat\, basic equipment\, then get on the water to practice steering and maneuvers. Expect to be in the water for 60 to 90 minutes\, after the heat of the day\, and enjoy the gorgeous golden hour and sunset on the Allegheny River. \nNo previous paddling experience is required. Efficient paddling focuses on upper-body and core strength\, which is needed to propel yourself across the water. You will get wet from the paddle moving across the deck. Water to drink\, hats for your head\, and appropriate footwear are recommended. \nSolo kayaks are best for participants 325-pounds or under\, while those 350-plus would be better served in a tandem kayak. Kayaks and PFDs are included in the ticket price. \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before the start time to ensure that the trip gets underway on time. Having performed at venues like the Pittsburgh International Airport\, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership\, and TLC Libations\, Luxurae looks forward to bringing her vibrant energy and passion for music to the event\, ensuring everyone feels welcome and uplifted. \nInside Pittsburgh Brewing Company \nIt’s a Celebration… with a purpose! \nThe Allegheny\, Monongahela and Ohio Rivers make up the headwaters of the Ohio River Basin and provide drinking water to over 5 million people and support a variety of plant and animal life. These rivers suffer from a combination of legacy and novel pollution sources\, the most common of which are acid mine drainage\, combined sewage overflows\, increased flooding and stormwater events\, and industrial pollution. Nearly a third of our region’s rivers and streams are considered impaired by the PA Department of Environmental Protection. \nThe Three Rivers Waterkeeper protects the drinking water of nearly five million people and the habitat of many animals and plants\, including endangered species such as the salamander mussel. Over the modern history of our region\, mass industrialization polluted our waterways\, and our rivers became devoid of aquatic life. Fortunately\, with the implementation of the 1972 Clean Water Act and subsequent clean water laws at the local\, state\, and federal levels\, community organizations have been able to hold polluters accountable. As a result\, we have seen wildlife come back to our rivers – including our national bird\, the Bald Eagle. On or along the Allegheny River alone\, the US Forest Service has documented over 50 mammals\, 200 birds\, 25 amphibians\, 20 reptiles\, 80 fishes\, and 25 freshwater mussels. These waterways also serve as a source of recreation and a way to connect people to nature through positive experiences on our waterways. \nAs your Waterkeeper based in Pittsburgh\, we hold polluters accountable and ensure that our local\, state and federal governments enforce the clean water laws which protect the public and environmental health. We combine scientific and legal advocacy to protect the water quality of the Allegheny\, Monongahela and Ohio Rivers\, and their respective watersheds. We are part of the Waterkeeper Alliance—a global movement of organizations working for clean\, healthy\, and abundant water for all people and the planet. We also partner with local environmental organizations to educate our community members\, connect them to their waterways\, and ensure clean waters for future generations. DESCRIPTION:2025 PA River of the Year \nThe 2025 Delaware River Sojourn\, a guided paddling and camping adventure along the Delaware River\, is happening June 14-20. Join us as we celebrate the Sojourn’s 30th Anniversary and the Delaware River being named Pennsylvania’s 2025 River of the Year! The Sojourn combines on-water experiences and educational learning opportunities and is geared for folks of all ages and experience levels. Daily paddles average ten miles\, and participants can sign up for the whole event or for the section(s) or day(s) of their choice. Equipment is provided\, or feel free to bring your own boat. Our river guides teach basic instruction and help keep paddlers safe while on the water. Since 1995\, the Delaware River Sojourn has been bringing paddlers of all ages & experience levels on the Delaware River\, creating new stewards of this precious resource. Getting out on the river provides a direct connection to and appreciation for the water\, and to do so in a safe\, welcoming and fun environment helps foster that feeling for a lifetime.
