SUMMARY:2024 Allegheny River of the Year Event: 3 Rivers Watch (Boating) with Three Rivers Waterkeeper
DESCRIPTION:Join Three Rivers Waterkeeper for an in-person training session while kayaking or on our Waterkeeper boat where we go over what pollution to look for and how to report pollution while you’re out by or on the water! For our training sessions\, all equipment such as kayaks and life jackets will be provided. \n3 Rivers Watch is a network of volunteers who are active river users or river watchers\, from individuals to groups\, who have a vested interest in clean water. You can monitor the water while you are boating\, kayaking\, swimming\, or even walking along the river. Our 3 Rivers Watch training sessions include information about the types of pollution found in our waterways and how to report it along with an on-the-water experience in our watershed. The kayak version will last roughly an hour on single kayaks and is good for anyone with a base knowledge of kayaking. If you are passionate about creating drinkable\, fishable\, and swimmable waters\, then you might be a great fit for our 3 Rivers Watch program. \nUpcoming 2024 Sessions:\nSaturday\, May 18th (boating) | 1 – 3:15 PM\, Millvale Riverfront Park\nSaturday\, June 8th (kayaking) | 1 – 3 PM\, Monaca Boat Launch\, Ohio River\, with Beaver County Marcellus Awareness Community\nThursday\, July 11th (boating) | 6 – 8:30 PM\, Millvale Riverfront Park\nSaturday\, August 10th (kayaking) | 10 AM – 12 PM\, Elizabeth Boat Ramp\, Monongahela River\nSaturday\, September 14th (kayaking) | 10 AM – 12 PM\, Deer Creek Boat Ramp\, Allegheny River

SUMMARY:Susquehanna Greenway Sojourn Series
DESCRIPTION:Who’s ready for the ultimate sampling of the Susquehanna? The 2024 Susquehanna Sojourn Series has you covered! The managers of the Susquehanna River Water Trail are banding together to provide single day paddles that give you a taste of each unique section: the West Branch\, North Branch\, Middle Section\, and Lower Section. Sign up for one\, several\, or try them all! The Susquehanna Sojourn Series is presented as a celebration of the Susquehanna River Water Trail in honor of its newly released logos and branding. At over 500 miles\, the water trail is managed in sections. The logos were designed to identify these unique sections\, while also recognizing them within the larger system. The water trail managers are excited to implement this new branding onto comprehensive signage across the Susquehanna River\, assisting paddlers with safety and navigation on their adventures. See our website for descriptions of each individual sojourn: https://susquehannagreenway.org/sojourn-series/

SUMMARY:Lock Trough Classes
DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Riverfront and Three Rivers Outdoor Company are teaming up to provide 3 opportunities this season for lock through classes for paddlers in Allegheny County thanks to the 2024 Pennsylvania River Sojourn Mini Grant! This will allow paddlers an opportunity to learn more about navigating longer distances by water through accessing lock-through points with confidence! Locks and dams can be intimidating\, and even experienced paddlers may not feel confident or knowledgeable about how to pass through these barriers. These classes will help to support paddlers in confidently passing through locks and dams through practice and with the support of a group\, in navigating river infrastructure. Our hope is that paddlers will feel more confident in planning or even leading longer sojourns with confidence from taking this class. This is also a great opportunity to learn more about Friends of the Riverfront’s Three Rivers Heritage Trail stewardship clean up opportunities\, launch points\, seasonal free river-based educational programming and paddling opportunities\, and socialize with fellow paddlers. Register at friendsoftheriverfront.org/events (**will be posted closer to the event and will direct to a registration with 3ROC.)

SUMMARY:Paddling in Search of a Lost Plant on the Delaware River
DESCRIPTION:The Delaware Riverkeeper Network in launching a new volunteer science survey for a rare and imperiled aquatic plant last seen in the Lower Delaware River in the 1870s. New records show that this plant\, named “Podostemum\,” is returning to the Lower Delaware and its tributaries\, and the Delaware Riverkeeper Network seeks to train volunteers on the identification and unique properties of this plant so they themselves can conduct surveys for this plant in the Delaware River and throughout the region. Following an evening training session the night before our paddling journey\, volunteers will start the survey by paddling and surveying the Delaware River from Upper Black Eddy down through Point Pleasant in search of this rare aquatic plant on a one-day paddle spanning 10 miles of the river. Individuals will be able to wade in shallow areas\, or they may put on a mask-and-snorkel to survey these shallow habitats preferred by this aquatic plant. Interested individuals will all levels of paddling and science experience are welcome for this event! This paddling trip will truly be an exploration and underwater discovery trip along the Delaware River.
