SUMMARY:First Waves Regional Series & Aqua Lab Adventures
DESCRIPTION:First Waves empowers underserved youth with skills and opportunities to improve their lives and create lasting impacts on waterways throughout Pennsylvania. The program achieves these goals through transformative workshops that promote healthy lifestyles\, watershed conservation\, education in the art of filmmaking\, and diversity in outdoor recreation. Students of First Waves learn to recreate safely in local waterways and become active conservationists by planting trees\, removing litter\, and sampling water quality. Furthermore\, an education in filmmaking and digital media provides an outlet for self-expression and empowers youth to inspire positive change within their community. The program culminates in the production of documentary films that showcase the students’ achievements and inspires others to take part in conservation and outdoor recreation. The experiences illustrate how Pennsylvania’s waterways can be a canvas for youth engagement\, education\, and conservation. Get your tickets now! \nThe Allegheny River | The Ohi:yo’\nThe historic Allegheny River starts as a stream in Potter County\, meandering through a field of wildflowers before crossing briefly through New York and then through six counties in Western Pennsylvania. The 325-mile river ends in Pittsburgh where it meets the Monongahela River and flows into the Ohio River\, providing drinking water to more than one million people and acting as an ecologically and economically precious water trail. \nThe fertile valleys and abundant biodiversity have led many communities to call this place home\, including the O-non-dowa-gah (Seneca Nation) who call the Allegheny Ohi:yo’ (beautiful river\, the good river)\, the Lenni Lenape (Delaware Nation) who named it welhik-heny (most beautiful stream)\, and French settlers who referred to it as La Belle Riviere. \nA series of locks and dams were constructed in the early 20th century to make the Allegheny River navigable for barges to transport goods\, and now swimming\, boating\, and fishing are profoundly enjoyed by residents and visitors. The river includes the Allegheny Islands Wilderness\, a seven-island\, 372 acre preserve that boasts old-growth hardwoods and prolific bird populations. The US Forest Service has documented over 50 mammals\, 200 birds\, 25 amphibians\, 20 reptiles\, 80 fishes\, and 25 freshwater mussels in and around the Allegheny\, including the threatened Salamander Mussel (Simpsonaias ambigua)\, who help improve our water quality by filtering out sediment and pollutants. \nWhether you are bird watching\, island camping\, or traveling through the locks\, you are sure to find that the Allegheny River is rich with life\, history\, and beauty.

SUMMARY:Lock Through Classes
DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Riverfront and Three Rivers Outdoor Company are teaming up to provide 3 opportunities this season for lock through classes for paddlers in Allegheny County thanks to the 2024 Pennsylvania River Sojourn Mini Grant! This will allow paddlers an opportunity to learn more about navigating longer distances by water through accessing lock-through points with confidence! Locks and dams can be intimidating\, and even experienced paddlers may not feel confident or knowledgeable about how to pass through these barriers. These classes will help to support paddlers in confidently passing through locks and dams through practice and with the support of a group\, in navigating river infrastructure. Our hope is that paddlers will feel more confident in planning or even leading longer sojourns with confidence from taking this class. This is also a great opportunity to learn more about Friends of the Riverfront’s Three Rivers Heritage Trail stewardship clean up opportunities\, launch points\, seasonal free river-based educational programming and paddling opportunities\, and socialize with fellow paddlers. Register at friendsoftheriverfront.org/events (**will be posted closer to the event and will direct to a registration with 3ROC.)

SUMMARY:Paddling in Search of a Lost Plant on the Delaware River
DESCRIPTION:The Delaware Riverkeeper Network in launching a new volunteer science survey for a rare and imperiled aquatic plant last seen in the Lower Delaware River in the 1870s. New records show that this plant\, named “Podostemum\,” is returning to the Lower Delaware and its tributaries\, and the Delaware Riverkeeper Network seeks to train volunteers on the identification and unique properties of this plant so they themselves can conduct surveys for this plant in the Delaware River and throughout the region. Following an evening training session the night before our paddling journey\, volunteers will start the survey by paddling and surveying the Delaware River from Upper Black Eddy down through Point Pleasant in search of this rare aquatic plant on a one-day paddle spanning 10 miles of the river. Individuals will be able to wade in shallow areas\, or they may put on a mask-and-snorkel to survey these shallow habitats preferred by this aquatic plant. Interested individuals will all levels of paddling and science experience are welcome for this event! This paddling trip will truly be an exploration and underwater discovery trip along the Delaware River.
