SUMMARY:Friends of the Riverfront: Lock Through Paddles
DESCRIPTION:POWR is pleased to support and promote the Friends of the Riverfront’s Lock Through Paddles. \nFriends of the Riverfront and Three Rivers Outdoor Company are teaming up to provide 4 different lock through classes for paddlers in Allegheny County. This will allow paddlers a safe and welcoming opportunity to learn more about navigating longer distances by water through accessing lock-through points with confidence! Locks and dams can be intimidating\, and even experienced paddlers may not feel confident or knowledgeable about how to pass through these barriers. These classes will help to support paddlers in confidently\npassing through locks and dams through practice and with the support of a group\, in navigating river infrastructure. Our hope is that paddlers will feel more confident in planning or even leading longer sojourns with confidence from taking this class. This is\nalso a great opportunity to learn more about Friends of the Riverfront’s Three Rivers Heritage Trail stewardship and clean up opportunities\, learn about the Three Rivers Heritage Trail launch points\, socialize with fellow paddlers\, share routes & trip plans\, and\nmore.\nhttps://3riversoutdoor.com/events/lockingthroughjune\nhttps://3riversoutdoor.com/events/lockingthroughjuly\nhttps://3riversoutdoor.com/events/lockingthroughaugust\nhttps://3riversoutdoor.com/events/lockingthroughsept\nhttps://friendsoftheriverfront.org/

SUMMARY:Webinar: Bringing Green Parking Lots to Your Community: Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Join your watershed colleagues and POWR for Part 2 of 2-part conversation about Bringing Green Parking Lots to Your Community: The Benefits and Challenges. \nParking lots have been one of the fastest growing land uses\, covering acres upon acres of land with impervious asphalt and becoming a dominant landscape feature in many communities They contribute to the urban heat island\, which elevates temperatures in communities\, and have an impact on water quality and stormwater runoff that degrade our streams and rivers. They can also detract from community character and affect pedestrian and driver safety. \nGreen parking lots can reverse those trends by creating a landscape that not only improves the aesthetics and safety of a site\, but also intercepts stormwater runoff and allows infiltration\, shades parked cars and paved surfaces\, and promotes evapotranspiration to cool the surrounding environment. \nPart 2 will focus on: \n• Developing municipal codes and ordinances that require green parking lots \n• Case studies of various community and commercial parking lots \nPart 2 will include a presentation but participants will be encouraged to share local examples\, ask specific questions\, and learn from one another’s ideas and green parking lot success stories. \nWe will welcome Pattie E. B. Guttenplan\, RLA\, AICP\, Assistant Director of Design & Outreach\, Montgomery County Planning Commission who will share her expertise during this webinar.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Riparian Buffers...Not Just for Water Quality
DESCRIPTION:Meadows and forests adjacent to waterways not only help remove pollutants from stormwater flowing into our waterways\, they also serve as important habitat and migration corridors for many of Pennsylvania’s native land (and air) based animals! Knowing and understanding these additional benefits can help you engage and inspire more people in your community by tapping into the issues and creatures they may care most about. \nDuring this free webinar\, staff of the PA Game Commission and volunteers of Bird Town Pennsylvania will share their expert knowledge about mammal and bird species that use these habitats to feed\, breed and raise young\, take cover from predators\, and migrate seasonally from their summer to winter homes. There will also be plenty of time for conversations and questions. \nRegister today to make sure you get the Zoom link. Deadline to register is 4 PM on Monday January 16. \nThis event is FREE\, but registration is required.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Managing Invasive Species and Overgrown Landscapes with Goats
DESCRIPTION:We hope you will join us for a presentation about managing the fast-growing\, pervasive\, and invasive Japanese Knotweed. Japanese Knotweed is commonly found along streams and rivers\, in low-lying areas\, and in disturbed areas such as rights-of-way. It often creates monoculture stands that threaten native plant communities. It is notoriously difficult to manage and get rid of! \nJoin POWR and your watershed organization colleagues for a presentation on one method that was used to control knotweed in a local park: GOATS! During the webinar\, you will learn how this approach was was selected\, planned\, and implemented\, how the community and key partners worked together\, and what the short and long-term outcomes have been\, and what it all cost. Our presenters will also share some key lessons learned\, in case you want to consider a similar effort in your watershed! \nThis free webinar\, presented by staff and volunteers of the Shenango River Watchers and the Sharon Beautification Commission\, will also include plenty of time for conversations and questions. \nRegister today to make sure you get the Zoom link.
