SUMMARY:Lock Through Classes
DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Riverfront and Three Rivers Outdoor Company are teaming up to provide 3 opportunities this season for lock through classes for paddlers in Allegheny County thanks to the 2024 Pennsylvania River Sojourn Mini Grant! This will allow paddlers an opportunity to learn more about navigating longer distances by water through accessing lock-through points with confidence! Locks and dams can be intimidating\, and even experienced paddlers may not feel confident or knowledgeable about how to pass through these barriers. These classes will help to support paddlers in confidently passing through locks and dams through practice and with the support of a group\, in navigating river infrastructure. Our hope is that paddlers will feel more confident in planning or even leading longer sojourns with confidence from taking this class. This is also a great opportunity to learn more about Friends of the Riverfront’s Three Rivers Heritage Trail stewardship clean up opportunities\, launch points\, seasonal free river-based educational programming and paddling opportunities\, and socialize with fellow paddlers. Register at friendsoftheriverfront.org/events (**will be posted closer to the event and will direct to a registration with 3ROC.)

SUMMARY:Webinar: PA Fertilizer Law and Homeowner Lawn Care For Healthy Watersheds
DESCRIPTION:Pennsylvania’s Fertilizer Law was updated in July of 2022 in part to help protect local streams and rivers. But many homeowners still don’t know about it and how it applies to them. Join POWR as we host Denise Uzupis\, Natural Resource Program Specialist with the PA Department of Agriculture\, to learn more about the law\, to whom it applies\, and how you can help spread the word about better lawn management for improved water quality! \nAs critical community outreach and education volunteers\, you help people understand how their actions affect water quality. This webinar will provide you with additional knowledge and resources you can use and share with others to ensure we are all doing our part to keep pollution out of local waterways. \nThis webinar is free\, but registration is required in order to receive the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Paddling in Search of a Lost Plant on the Delaware River
DESCRIPTION:The Delaware Riverkeeper Network in launching a new volunteer science survey for a rare and imperiled aquatic plant last seen in the Lower Delaware River in the 1870s. New records show that this plant\, named “Podostemum\,” is returning to the Lower Delaware and its tributaries\, and the Delaware Riverkeeper Network seeks to train volunteers on the identification and unique properties of this plant so they themselves can conduct surveys for this plant in the Delaware River and throughout the region. Following an evening training session the night before our paddling journey\, volunteers will start the survey by paddling and surveying the Delaware River from Upper Black Eddy down through Point Pleasant in search of this rare aquatic plant on a one-day paddle spanning 10 miles of the river. Individuals will be able to wade in shallow areas\, or they may put on a mask-and-snorkel to survey these shallow habitats preferred by this aquatic plant. Interested individuals will all levels of paddling and science experience are welcome for this event! This paddling trip will truly be an exploration and underwater discovery trip along the Delaware River. SUMMARY:2024 Allegheny River of the Year Event: 3 Rivers Watch (Boating) with Three Rivers Waterkeeper
DESCRIPTION:Join Three Rivers Waterkeeper for an in-person training session while kayaking or on our Waterkeeper boat where we go over what pollution to look for and how to report pollution while you’re out by or on the water! For our training sessions\, all equipment such as kayaks and life jackets will be provided. \n3 Rivers Watch is a network of volunteers who are active river users or river watchers\, from individuals to groups\, who have a vested interest in clean water. You can monitor the water while you are boating\, kayaking\, swimming\, or even walking along the river. Venture Outdoors welcomes active folks in larger bodies to get outside this year through its series of size-friendly outings\, at a pace that is safe and comfortable for each person. Each trip listing will give you the information you need to decide if the outing is right for you: active time and pace\, general route and terrain\, and if any experience is needed. You can look forward to a variety of monthly activities throughout the year\, all in a positive and welcoming atmosphere in which we will celebrate all shapes and sizes. Join us for one outing\, join us for all. This is where you belong. \nAllegheny River Sunset Paddle\nNew to kayaking? This is the place to start. Our kayak instructors can train you to paddle with efficiency\, grace\, and direction. Learn about your boat\, basic equipment\, then get on the water to practice steering and maneuvers. Expect to be in the water for 60 to 90 minutes\, after the heat of the day\, and enjoy the gorgeous golden hour and sunset on the Allegheny River. \nNo previous paddling experience is required. Efficient paddling focuses on upper-body and core strength\, which is needed to propel yourself across the water. You will get wet from the paddle moving across the deck. Water to drink\, hats for your head\, and appropriate footwear are recommended. \nSolo kayaks are best for participants 325-pounds or under\, while those 350-plus would be better served in a tandem kayak. Kayaks and PFDs are included in the ticket price. \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before the start time to ensure that the trip gets underway on time. Dress for the weather (Venture Outdoors trips proceed rain or shine!)\, and bring water. By purchasing a ticket\, you acknowledge that you are physically able to undertake the activity described above.

SUMMARY:2024 Allegheny River of the Year Event - 4th of July Fireworks Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Fourth Of July Fireworks Paddle \nJoin us for a cool night paddle under the city lights on the Allegheny River as we watch Pittsburgh’s Fourth of July fireworks show light up the skyline! Previous kayak experience is required. Please arrive early to allow time to find parking. \nThe start of the fireworks is scheduled for 9:35. We plan to be on the water and in a position to watch the fireworks by then. If time allows after\, and participants are interested\, we can continue kayaking on the water until the scheduled end of the program. \nTrip Leader: Our trained Excursionists and Volunteer Trip Leaders all have night paddling experience. They will guide the group along the river before the show. Once a good spot is found\, the group will remain there to take in the fireworks! \nActivity level: Intermediate – We recommend participants have some paddling experience in the past. This does not need to be extensive\, not does it need to have occurred during the nighttime. However\, nighttime paddling has more variables so the previous experience will come in handy! \nWhat to Bring: While kayaking is not necessarily a “get wet” sport\, you might get dripped on or splashed occasionally. It is best to wear clothes that dry quickly. Wear comfortable shoes that could potentially get wet. Additionally\, since we will be paddling at night\, a light jacket might come in handy. Venture Outdoors will provide all the necessary kayak lights for nighttime operations. Participants can also bring a headlamp if they would like \nDistance: Participants should not expect to cover a long distance for this trip – likely between 0.5 and 1.0 miles overall. We will depart from the launch\, do some light paddling around the Point area (unable to cross the river to the Point due to the fireworks safety zone)\, and then remain on the water for the show. \nStarting Location: The trip will depart from our launch at Heinz Quay on the riverwalk directly below Acrisure Stadium. The google maps link is below. \nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/Jnsjfnye2rD3MuEx7 \nTicket Sales Close: Ticket sales will close on Thursday\, July 3 at 4:00 PM. \nOther Information: \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before the start time to ensure that the trip gets underway on time. Please be mindful of traffic and road closures that may occur due to the Pirates game. Parking may take longer than usual as well.
