History Paddle
Learn about the history of Pittsburgh on the water! This program will depart from our Downtown pop-up and paddle around the Allegheny River while our trip leaders cover interesting facts and stories about Pittsburgh’s land and waterways.
Trip Leader: Our trained Excursionists and Volunteer Trip Leaders all have extensive paddling experience. They will provide an instructional/safety talk before getting on the water and then guide the group along the river.
Activity level: Beginner – this event is a designed to be a calm paddle along the river. The Allegheny River is generally smooth flowing, but it does have motorized traffic on it as well. If you would prefer to master your kayaking skills before paddling on the river, check out some of our offerings at North Park!
What to Bring: While kayaking is not usually a “get wet” sport, you might get dripped on or splashed occasionally. Additionally, the chance of a capsize is always present, so be mindful about what you bring on the water with you. It is best to wear clothes that dry quickly. Wear comfortable shoes that could potentially get wet.
Distance: Participants should expect to cover between 1.5 and 2.0 miles overall.
Starting Location: The trip will depart from our launch at Heinz Quay on the riverwalk directly below Acrisure Stadium. The google maps link is below.
