Friends of the Riverfront and Three Rivers Outdoor Company are teaming up to provide 3 opportunities this season for lock through classes for paddlers in Allegheny County thanks to the 2024 Pennsylvania River Sojourn Mini Grant! This will allow paddlers an opportunity to learn more about navigating longer distances by water through accessing lock-through points with confidence! Locks and dams can be intimidating, and even experienced paddlers may not feel confident or knowledgeable about how to pass through these barriers. These classes will help to support paddlers in confidently passing through locks and dams through practice and with the support of a group, in navigating river infrastructure. Our hope is that paddlers will feel more confident in planning or even leading longer sojourns with confidence from taking this class. This is also a great opportunity to learn more about Friends of the Riverfront’s Three Rivers Heritage Trail stewardship clean up opportunities, launch points, seasonal free river-based educational programming and paddling opportunities, and socialize with fellow paddlers.
