The Perki-Bay Expedition is a one-of-a-kind youth paddling experience. After successfully completing a 6-month internship, participants embark on a wilderness-style expedition through the heart of Philadelphia. The Perki-Bay Expedition is a 5-day, 50-mile, self-supported sojourn, where participants paddle loaded canoes from the Perkiomen Creek, down the Schuylkill River and onto the Delaware River - essentially tracing the waters of the Perkiomen to where they meet the sea. Connecting Pittsburgh’s youth to paddling in the dramatic canopy of Pittsburgh’s Downtown, the ‘Colors of the Rivers: Pittsburgh Sojourn’ will provide educational and outdoor recreation opportunities and provide many participants with their first experience on the water. Youth will paddle the Allegheny River up to the Point of Pittsburgh where the Allegheny and Monongahela converge to form the Ohio and learn from experts ecological monitoring techniques and how to look for signs of pollution.
