Delaware River

The Delaware River is of historical, recreational, and natural importance to the country. The river that marks Washington’s crossing, the turning point of the Revolutionary War, it was crucial in the industrial revolution, and now the Delaware River Port is the largest freshwater port in the world. While over 14 million people depend on the Delaware River for drinking water, the river itself was once so polluted that it turned the hulls of ships dark brown. However, thanks to the collaborative effort of government agencies and nonprofits, the health of the Delaware River has been restored. The river now holds more National Wild and Scenic designations than any other river and is home to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, one of the top 20 most visited National Park units in the country. Currently, many of the tributaries of the Delaware River are under study to become nationally protected under the Wild & Scenic program as well.

The Delaware River showcases a legacy of collaboration for environmental good, through the species it hosts, the communities that have been established around it, and the outdoor recreation it provides. As the PA 2025 River of the Year, the Delaware River would use the year to celebrate the power of collaboration, featured in collaboration with the Delaware River Sojourn which is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2025.

Perkiomen Creek

The Perkiomen Creek is a true hidden gem. Located just northwest of Philadelphia, the Perkiomen offers a host of opportunities to explore the wildlands of southeastern Pennsylvania. The creek itself offers over 14 miles of paddling and is the newest PA State Water Trail in the system. In addition to the water trail, the creek is flanked by its land based counterpart, the Perkiomen Trail, which paralels the creek on a repurposed railroad bed for over 20 miles. The creek is cared for by the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy, who hold a number of fun and engaging events both in and along the creek. The premier events in this lineup include the Lenape Challenge Adventure Race, the Perkiomen Creek Sojourn and the the Perkiomen Creek Stream Cleanup. The Lenape Challenge is a team challenge where partners run 5 miles along the creek and over Spring Mountain, then paddle 2 1/2 miles down the creek to the finish at the Conservancy’s headquarters. The Sojourn is steadily growing in popularity, and in 2024 over 200 paddlers traversed the 10 mile course from Schwenksville to Oaks. The Stream Cleanup is the largest single-day stream cleanup in the state of Pennsylvania and routinely attracts nearly 2,000 volunteers annually. The Perkiomen Creek offers the perfect blend of accessibility and escape… it’s a truly beautiful greenway that’s located close to home.

Youghiogheny River

Youghiogheny River

With its rushing mountain waters, slow-flowing meanders, and a rich cultural history, the 134-mile Youghiogheny River is a haven for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.

From old-growth hemlock stands to unique scour ecosystems, this river corridor is a haven for rare and endangered plant and animal species. It’s a place where nature thrives, and we can witness the wonders of the natural world.

With over 100 trails providing access to scenic vistas and unique habitats, we can explore the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Anglers can cast their lines into the cool, clear waters, hoping to catch a prized wild brook trout. For thrill-seekers, the Youghiogheny offers world-class whitewater rafting, where you can experience the birthplace of this exhilarating sport.

While the Youghiogheny River has faced its fair share of challenges, including the impacts of industry and coal mining, dedicated organizations like the Mountain Watershed Association (MWA) work tirelessly to protect and restore this precious waterway. Through their efforts, they have successfully halted harmful developments and improved water quality, ensuring a brighter future for the river and its communities.

Together, let’s make the Youghiogheny River the 2025 River of the Year! Celebration of this designation will be paired with the celebration of MWA’s 30th anniversary as an organization. Highlighting the achievements of MWA and their partners will inspire and empower other communities facing similar challenges. We can preserve the natural beauty, enhance water quality, and safeguard the biodiversity of the Youghiogheny River for generations to come.
