First Waves empowers underserved youth with skills and opportunities to improve their lives and create lasting impacts on waterways throughout Pennsylvania. The program achieves these goals through transformative workshops that promote healthy lifestyles, watershed conservation, education in the art of filmmaking, and diversity in outdoor recreation. Students of First Waves learn to recreate safely in local waterways and become active conservationists by planting trees, removing litter, and sampling water quality. Furthermore, an education in filmmaking and digital media provides an outlet for self-expression and empowers youth to inspire positive change within their community. The program culminates in the production of documentary films that showcase the students’ achievements and inspires others to take part in conservation and outdoor recreation. The experiences illustrate how Pennsylvania’s waterways can be a canvas for youth engagement, education, and conservation.
