Paddling in Search of a Lost Plant on the Delaware River

August 30

The Delaware Riverkeeper Network in launching a new volunteer science survey for a rare and imperiled aquatic plant last seen in the Lower Delaware River in the 1870s. New records show that this plant, named “Podostemum,” is returning to the Lower Delaware and its tributaries, and the Delaware Riverkeeper Network seeks to train volunteers on the identification and unique properties of this plant so they themselves can conduct surveys for this plant in the Delaware River and throughout the region. Following an evening training session the night before our paddling journey, volunteers will start the survey by paddling and surveying the Delaware River from Upper Black Eddy down through Point Pleasant in search of this rare aquatic plant on a one-day paddle spanning 10 miles of the river. Individuals will be able to wade in shallow areas, or they may put on a mask-and-snorkel to survey these shallow habitats preferred by this aquatic plant. Interested individuals will all levels of paddling and science experience are welcome for this event! This paddling trip will truly be an exploration and underwater discovery trip along the Delaware River.
